This matter of hwa-du practice can be likened to a mosquito biting an iron bull. The mosquito does not try to figure out, “Do I do it this way, or that?” Its needlelike mouth pressed firmly on the impenetrable, it risks body and life, in one moment penetrating through with its whole being.

參話頭這件事，好比蚊子叮鐵牛。 蚊子不會試圖弄清楚，“我是這樣做，還是那樣做”？ 它針尖般的嘴緊緊地叮在無法穿透的鐵牛上，它置生死於度外，一瞬間徹底參破話頭。
